Thus, in 1982, the Springboks of South Africa were defeated for the first time, in 1983 the Australian Wallabies (in Brisbane) and in 1985 they managed to wrest a draw from the All-Blacks of New Zealand, who would later be the winners of the first Rugby World Cup. Besides they were able to beat the top 5 nations in this decade. 1985 they won the first time against France and in 1990 the first time against England, which are the two best teams in the northern hemisphere.

At the first Rugby World Cup the Pumas only played a side role, that did not express their true potential. Besides of their 25 to 16 win in the first game against Italy, the performed pretty poorly with a 28:9 defeat in the second game against the Fidschi islands that stopped them from progressing to the quarterfinals. The lost game was lost to the All Blacks by 46 to 15.

The Pumas are the most successful rugby team in America and are competing with the giants in world rugby in the northern and southern hemisphere since decades. At the last World Cup in 2015 they went to the semifinal and in 2007 they managed to reach the third spot.
